Our Journey

From national geopark to two UNESCO green cards.

  1. 1257

    The Samalas volcano erupts, forming the caldera that holds Segara Anak lake.

  2. 1997

    Gunung Rinjani National Park is established.

  3. 2010

    Rinjani-Lombok is established as a National Geopark.

  4. 2018

    Designated a UNESCO Global Geopark. In the same year, Lombok becomes a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

    First revalidation: green card.

  6. 2025

    Second revalidation: UNESCO's evaluators recommend a second consecutive green card.

  7. 2026

    The green card certificate is handed over at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 28 April. On 2 May the Rinjani Geopark Information Centre opens in Sembalun.
