About the Geopark
The Rinjani-Lombok UNESCO Global Geopark: what it is, how it came to be, and the story its rocks tell.
A UNESCO Global Geopark since 2018, Rinjani-Lombok protects the landscape left by the 1257 Samalas eruption and uses it for education and for the livelihoods of the people who live around it.
What is a UNESCO Global Geopark?
A single area where geological heritage of international value is managed for protection, education and sustainable development.
Our Journey
From national geopark to two UNESCO green cards.
Geological Story
How a subduction-zone volcano built an island, destroyed itself in 1257, and began to grow again.
Management
The Geopark is managed together with the Biosphere Reserve by the Rinjani-Lombok MIDAS Management Agency.
